4 Best Hotels Inside Dubrovnik's Old Town Walls

Dubrovnik's Old Town is one of those places that looks almost too beautiful to be real. Massive stone walls surround a compact maze of marble streets, Baroque churches, and terracotta rooftops tumbling toward the impossibly blue Adriatic Sea. And yes, you can actually sleep inside those walls.

Staying within the Old Town means you can wander the Stradun at dawn before the day-trippers arrive, duck into hidden courtyards, and stumble home from dinner without worrying about a cab. Here are four hotels that make it happen.

1. The Pucic Palace

Sitting right on Gundulic Square, the Pucic Palace is the grande dame of Old Town Dubrovnik. This 17th-century palace has been lovingly restored into a boutique hotel with 19 rooms featuring antique furniture, silk drapes, and marble bathrooms. You can have breakfast on the square watching the morning market set up below your window. Rates range from 300 to 500 EUR per night in peak season, but the location is truly unbeatable.

2. Hotel Stari Grad

A more affordable option just steps from the Stradun, Hotel Stari Grad occupies a beautifully renovated medieval building. The eight rooms are compact but thoughtfully designed with exposed stone walls and modern amenities. There is a lovely rooftop terrace where you can enjoy drinks with views of the cathedral dome. Rooms start around 150 to 220 EUR per night, which is honestly reasonable for sleeping inside a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

3. Apartments Kovac

If you prefer a self-catering setup, the Kovac apartments are a local favorite. Run by a friendly family, these stone-walled apartments are scattered throughout the Old Town, each one unique. Some have sea views, others open onto quiet courtyards. They are simple but clean and full of character. Prices run from 80 to 140 EUR per night, making them one of the most budget-friendly ways to stay inside the walls.

4. Villa Dubrovnik

Technically just outside the walls on the eastern cliffs, Villa Dubrovnik deserves a mention because of its jaw-dropping position overlooking the sea and the Old Town. The infinity pool seems to melt into the Adriatic, and the hotel has a private beach and a boat shuttle that drops you right at the Old Town harbor in three minutes. Rooms start around 350 EUR per night and climb steeply in summer, but the views alone are worth the splurge.

A few tips for your Dubrovnik stay. The Old Town gets extremely crowded between 10 AM and 4 PM when cruise ship passengers flood in. If you are staying inside the walls, take advantage of the early mornings and late evenings when the city belongs to the locals and overnight guests. Also, pack light. There are a lot of stairs and no cars inside the walls, so a wheeled suitcase can become your worst enemy on the cobblestones.

Dubrovnik is one of those rare cities where the setting does all the heavy lifting. You do not need an itinerary. You just need a good place to sleep and the willingness to get a little lost.
