Split is not a museum piece. Unlike Dubrovnik, which can feel like a beautiful stage set during peak season, Split is a living, breathing Dalmatian city where Roman emperor Diocletian's 1,700-year-old palace walls now house apartments, bars, and laundry lines. People shop for groceries in the same marble halls where Romans once walked. It is chaotic, loud, gorgeous, and completely addictive.

The Riva promenade along the harbour is the city's social heart — all palm trees, bobbing boats, and cafe terraces packed with people nursing afternoon coffees. From here you can catch ferries to Hvar, Brac, and Vis, making Split the perfect base for island hopping. The hotel scene has matured enormously in recent years, with smart boutique properties now rivalling anything on the Croatian coast. Here are five of the best for 2026.

Judita Palace sits directly on Narodni Trg, the people's square that has been the centre of Split life since medieval times. The building is a restored Renaissance palazzo, and the rooms are a thoughtful blend of exposed stone, antique details, and modern comfort. Ask for a room with a square-facing balcony — sipping your morning coffee while watching the square wake up below you is pure Split. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful, and the location simply could not be more central. At around 200 EUR per night in peak season, it is fairly priced for what you get.

Marmont Heritage occupies a narrow building just inside the palace walls, a short stroll from the Peristyle and the cathedral. The design is boutique-chic with a muted palette of stone and linen, and the rooms manage to feel spacious despite the constraints of a centuries-old structure. The rooftop terrace is a highlight — sunset drinks here with views over the terracotta rooftops to the harbour are hard to top. The breakfast is above average for Split, with local cheeses, cured meats, and freshly baked bread. It is a polished base in an unbeatable location.

If you prefer a bit more space and a neighbourhood feel, Divota is an excellent pick. Located in the Bacvice area just east of the Old Town, near the famous Bacvice beach, the hotel offers apartment-style rooms with small kitchenettes. The decor is bright and Mediterranean, and there is a rooftop pool with sea views. Bacvice beach is a five-minute walk, and the Old Town is about ten minutes on foot along the waterfront — a lovely evening stroll. At roughly 120 EUR per night, the extra space and kitchen access make it great value, especially for longer stays or families.

Cornaro sits just outside the western wall of Diocletian's Palace, which means you are steps from the old town but also close to the Green Market and the city's more local side. The hotel is modern and well-run, with clean contemporary rooms, a rooftop pool and bar, and an excellent breakfast. It is a reliable four-star option that does everything well without any pretension. The rooftop pool is the real selling point — it is one of the few hotel pools in central Split, and floating there while gazing at the bell tower of the cathedral is a memorable experience.

Antique Split is a small heritage hotel carved into the eastern wall of Diocletian's Palace. Some rooms literally have Roman stonework as a feature wall, which is the kind of historical immersion no modern hotel can fake. The property has just eight rooms, each uniquely shaped by the ancient architecture. The communal terrace overlooks the bustling eastern market square, and the owner is a passionate Split local who treats every guest like a friend. It is intimate, characterful, and absolutely one-of-a-kind.

Split is wonderful from May to October, but June and September hit the sweet spot of warm sea temperatures, long days, and fewer crowds than July and August. Make sure to take at least one day trip to the island of Vis — it is the farthest inhabited island from the coast and the least developed, with crystal-clear water and incredible seafood.
